The Golden Era of Bodybuilding (1965–1980)
The 1965–1980 era of bodybuilding, told in original writing and checked against modern evidence.
The golden era is the part of bodybuilding history this site is named after. It runs, by most accounts, from the first Mr. Olympia in 1965 to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s final win in 1980. It is when the classic physique took shape and when a handful of champions, training in California gyms, made the sport famous.
Our golden-era coverage has two jobs. The first is to tell the history accurately, using published records rather than legend. The second is to test the era’s training ideas against modern research, so you can keep what works and drop what doesn’t. We use original writing only, and we publish photographs of real athletes only when we hold the rights to them.
Timeline
- 1965 First Mr. Olympia (18 September, Brooklyn Academy of Music); Larry Scott wins. Gold’s Gym opens in Venice, California.

- 1975 The Olympia in Pretoria is filmed for Pumping Iron, released in January 1977.
- 1976 Franco Columbu wins.
- 1977–79 Frank Zane wins three consecutive titles.
- 1980 Schwarzenegger returns and wins a disputed seventh title, often treated as the end of the era.
