What overload actually means

Progressive overload is simply asking your body to do a little more over time, forcing it to adapt. It is the single non-negotiable principle behind every strength or size gain. How fast should you progress?

Beginners can often add weight or reps almost every session — enjoy it, it doesn't last. Intermediates progress week to week; advanced lifters may fight for gains monthly. A reliable method is double progression: work a rep range (say 8–12), add reps until you hit the top, then add weight and drop back to the bottom.

Why you stall and how to fix it

Stalls usually come from under-recovery, not too little effort. If a lift stops moving for 2–3 weeks, first check sleep, protein, and total stress. Then try a small deload (cut volume ~40% for a week), fix technique, or adjust the rep range. Grinding harder into a stall is how injuries happen.

The levers you can push besides weight

Adding plates is the obvious lever, but it is not the only one. You can add reps at the same weight, add a set, shorten rest slightly, improve range of motion, or slow the eccentric. Double progression — add reps until you hit the top of a range, then add weight and drop back to the bottom — is the most beginner-proof method. Tracking that keeps you honest

You cannot overload what you do not measure. Keep a training log — a notebook or an app — recording weight, reps, and how hard each set felt. Over a month you want the total work to trend up. If it plateaus for two to three weeks, that is your signal to change a variable rather than grind the same numbers.
